The Mother of All Bats. The matriarch over all. Belfry. There will be only one.
She is our Volo sculpture by Maggie, given an intensely complex new look. She has a whole newly remade angry biting head and neck, totally customized new mane and tail with extreme tendril detailing flowing between and around her enormous, to-scale bat wings. Her legs, hips, and shoulders have all been adjusted to be accurately in flight, and her wings are billowing back as she uses them to brake her flight through the air for an attack.
She is painted in an extremely complex black/bay, with mottled speckled striping through her wings to bring contrast into their dimension. Her wings are made from our plastic, reinforced with steel boning through her wings into her body to keep her wings standing tall for years to come. Her wing tips are actually coated in our plastic in black, to ensure that even if she does bump into a wall or the top of your door frame – she’s tall – there won’t be a visible rub to white plastic. Her wings alone are 21” long, and the whole piece from base to wing tip is just over three feet tall.
We should know by now not to challenge Maggie with a production idea that seems too intense, too challenging, or simply too ‘much’ to be feasible. When there was idle musing about what size wings would actually be in scale to lift a 1:9 horse into the sky, most people say ‘oh man, they’d have to be huge. How would we even make wings that big? How would they be sturdy for transport? How would we mold and carve our plastic on that scale? This will stay theoretical, who would do that?”
Maggie would.
She visited us several times late this summer into fall, and worked on this piece for the majority of all of those visits. We stopped counting the hours put into this piece in the triple digits. One of the many wonderful things about a Maggie piece is that she cares just as much for structural integrity as she does for artistic impact, and this piece is a shining example of this balance. Her acrylic rod is an extra thick ¾”, and she has a solid piece of plastic in her midsection to hold the rod exactly in the right position. Her base was made by her husband Duncan, a skilled engineer in his own right. It is hand-polished walnut.
She will come in with a custom pelican case lined with real white silk, and depending on the location of her buyer, likely hand-delivered by Erin.
She is available for best offers over $5,000 and there is a silent reserve on this piece. She is a once in a lifetime work of art. Offers can be submitted through the form below until 8pm Eastern Time on Monday, November 10th.
